The competitiveness of Turkish metallurgy weakens

Since the last quarter of 2012, the competitiveness of the Turkish steel sector has seriously deteriorated, which is caused by the growth of domestic prices for scrap. Not long to wait for a drop in production and decline in exports of Turkish steel products with a simultaneous increase of imports of stormedia. Owing to all these factors, as well as a fairly liberal requirements for imported products and raw materials put Turkish industry in a very difficult position. The final point in this issue is put high tariffs on electricity, significantly increases the cost of production, in particular, in comparison with the EU, where the tariff system is much more flexible. A substantial share of tariffs are payments to the state funds, as well as environmental charges.
This situation is extremely negative impact not only on the steel sector of Turkey but also on the economy of the country. According to General Secretary of the Association of metallurgists of Turkey Veysel Aana, metallurgical sector is no longer able to function under the existing pressure.
